

He was born in New London, CT on Aug.6, 1931, to the late Benjamin and Mary (Kelsey) Nelson. He married Ruth Ann Joseph on September 22, 1951.
Fred is survived by his 3 children, daughter Sharon Plunkett of Niantic, son Dwayne Nelson of Niantic, and son Frederick (Robin) Nelson Jr. of Lyme; brother Robert (Lydia) Nelson of Waterford, sister Maryellen (Russell) Douton of FL and sister-in-law Evelyn Jerome of Old Lyme; grandchildren Connie (Jason) Herod of Waterford, John Stephens Jr. of Plainfield, Alicia Plunkett of Niantic and Alyson (Jimmy) Barr of NJ; 3 great-grandsons and his cherished great –granddaughter Charlotte.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife Ruth of 54 years, his parents, brother Benny Nelson and sister Mildred Hall.
Fred honorably served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was employed for many years as a heavy machine operator for Locarno Construction and Phillips Construction. He was a member of the American Legion Post 128 in Niantic and a longtime member of the Lower Valley CB Radio Club.
Fred was a professional wrestling enthusiast. He loved country music, old western movies and the CT Country Fairs. He treasured his afternoons with Charlotte, playing playdough, coloring and snuggling. Fred also enjoyed time with his dear friend Chicky Barberi watching structure demolitions and reminiscing. He will be remembered most for his quick wit, storytelling, sense of humor and unconditional love.
Fred’s family would like to thank the staff at Greentree Manor for their care, kindness and support during his final days.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 18, 2015 at 6:00pm in Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Lake Ave., Niantic, CT 06357.
