Patricia Gail Cleary

Patricia “Patty” Gail Cleary, 68, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2026, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born on June 6, 1957, the beloved daughter of Richard and Marcella Emery.

Patty was a dedicated and passionate member of her community, spending over 20 years as the head swim coach of the Southeastern Connecticut Dragons. She touched the lives of countless young athletes, not only teaching them the sport she loved but also instilling confidence, discipline, and teamwork. Above all, she always emphasized the importance of having fun, ensuring every swimmer felt joy both in and out of the pool.

Outside of coaching, Patty was an avid golfer who spent many happy years at Great Neck Country Club, where she enjoyed both the game and the friendships she built there. Above all else, Patty cherished time with her family, especially her nine grandchildren, who brought her immense joy and pride.

She is survived by her loving husband, Donald S. Cleary; her children, Donald P. Cleary and his wife, Tricia, and their children, Jack and Carter, of Old Lyme; Matthew Cleary and his wife, Kristen, and their children, Ella, Simon, Myla, and Macen, of Niantic; and Emily Coleman and her husband, Brian, and their children, Wyatt, Cooper, and Scarlett, of Waterford; and her six siblings, Susan Hiest, Tracey Corbett, Anita Ellis, Michael Emery, Guy Emery, and Timothy Emery.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Caitlyn Cleary, and her oldest brother, Richard Emery.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, April 11, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Lake Avenue, Niantic, CT. A funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Patty will be remembered for her strength, her kindness, and the deep love she had for her family and community. She will be dearly missed.
