Carolyn loved her family intensely and was truly the family rock. She was an incredibly hard worker with a 47-year tenure with the Portsmouth Public Schools as an interpreter for deaf children, helping many students succeed along the way. She also managed a rental property in Chesapeake. Carolyn was a devoted Christian who attended Deep Creek Baptist Church and Gateway Freewill Baptist Church.
Carolyn loved the beach and enjoyed spending summers in the Outer Banks with her family. She also loved holidays, especially Christmas, going all out on hanging lights and decorating every nook and cranny. Carolyn was known for her cooking. From peanut butter fudge and raisin bread to prime rib and butter beans, her Sunday lunches left you feeling full and comforted. Carolyn was an avid reader, often reading a book a day. She played a mean game of Bejeweled and loved posting pictures of her grandchildren to Facebook.
Carolyn was born in Leaksville, NC, to the late Otis Carter and Frances Fannin. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 56 years, Ceward R. Spangler, Jr.; son Daniel Spangler (Sarah); daughter Angie Cartwright (Tom); bonus kids, Susan Jones (Eric) and Jamie Harrison (Trish) and several nieces and nephews to include, Ray, Dawn, Jimmy, and Tasha; sister Lynda “Tootie” Miller; and 3 grandchildren, Ashley, Justin, and Olivia. Carolyn was predeceased by her brother Buzzy Carter and sister Debra Zehr.
Carolyn was a compassionate, giving, sweet, and caring woman. She touched countless lives and will be missed by all who knew her.
