Dane was a great young man albeit articulate and had a great personality to match the ultimate survivor who unfortunately left the world too soon Rest In Peace sweetness xo 😩😭😓😓❤️

To the family of Dane,
My name is Matt Dendy. I coached Dane and his sister Audrey in rock climbing for a short time. I really enjoyed getting to know Dane over that period and I ran into him from time to time at the gym after he left the team. When I saw him we always made it a point to talk to one another. He was so funny and interesting to talk to. I was amazed at Danes witty sense of humor and he would often say something that would always leave me thinking.   Dane told me last time we spoke about finishing nursing school and I told him I graduated as an x-ray tech. He was very proud of this accomplishment as was I. I just heard about Danes passing and I was stunned and very sad to hear this. He is a special human being with so much to offer this world. I want to extend my deepest sympathies to your entire family. We in the climbing community (which is small but growing) will miss having Dane be part of it.

I was fortunate to coach Dane as he began his journey as a rock climber. He was a joy to work with and be around every session. I particularly remember and value a trip he and I took to Enchanted Rock for some climbing. The entire ride was filled with laughter and conversation. While we hadn't talked in some time, I often found myself wondering what he was getting into and whose life he was enriching. Much love Dane! Miss ya bud.

My husband was in a motorcycle accident and Dane was his nurse (we are still here on his floor) and the love his coworkers have for him is truly amazing. Dane taught me how to give a shot to my husband so that I could do it when we go home. My husband questioned me on it today and my reply was “I’m doing it how Dane taught me”. I am so sorry for this family’s loss. I hope the memories here show just how far the reach of  Dane’s kindness really was. Rest in paradise. 

I will always remember the conversations we had about life and how it's hard to reach for the stars and stay grounded at the same time. Long nights playing video games and reminiscing on our past selves. Helping Dane figure out his cell phone issues while I was still working at T-mobile. Getting the inside scoop on all the new faces when I started my new job. 

Dane, if you ever see this in this life or the next. Please know that I will always cherish the times we shared. You brought me closer to one of the best friends I have and the impact you have had on all of our lives will always be in our hearts. This isn't a goodbye. This is "I'll see you when I see you brother". We love you.

Dane started working at Sentara Norfolk General when I was pregnant and almost ready to go out on maternity. It was when I came back to work last year that we became very close, working weekends together all the time. I have too many memories to type here. But I will always remember his sarcastic joking personality, silly jokes, our stupid inside jokes; every weekend when it was time to count all the narcotics, he would come by my pod and say "hey, its date night". Always made me giggle and get up and do one of my least favorite responsibilities of counting drugs.  He made every weekend interesting. Even after he switched units, he came down and had his lunch break with me and the other staff on 6K. I miss him more than words can say and feelings can describe. My heart aches to know that he was hurting so badly inside. I pray he is at peace now and send comfort and love to his family. Rest is paradise Dane!

I have worked with Dan (I do not mean any disrespect but that is how he introduced himself) several times. I can't never recall a night that we were not laughing about his jokes and twisted sense of humor at some point during the night. He was extremely smart. In the hospital "Bed Tower" is the department the control the influx of patients and assigns patients to a room. Commonly, Bed Tower technicians are somewhat rough and they tend to push everything and makes everyone works in a very high pace. Charge RNs are the main point of contact with bed tower for each specific unit.  One day when Dan was the charged RN in his unit and I am working in a different unit. I was able to hear a conversation where Bed Tower technician was intimidated about talking to him. He was making it clear in very smart and sarcastic way that all the nurses in his unit were busy. He became an instant hero in my eyes because he was vouching for his coworkers. No one has ever heard bed tower being intimidated by a charged RN! That was hilarious by itself! He is great loss to the nursing profession. RIP. My condolences to all his family!

I met Dane at Norfolk General hospital when he came to my unit to asked how it was one night.  We became friends after that.  I would always tell him I'm waiting to work with him on the oncology unit.  It was always a pleasure to see him at work.  I will miss our pleasantries and my trying to convince him to work with me.  He was always so cheeerful when I see him. 
Pray that God wraps his arms around his family when they need it the most.
