Dr. Daniel Tarrosa Solinap, age 88, has gone to rest on Saturday, December 18, 2021. He was born in Victorias City, Philippines to his parents, Jose and Encarnacion Solinap. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Perla Juaneza Solinap and his loving children, Joseph J. Solinap and Lea J. Solinap Laplace (son-in law, Peter Laplace), and his grandchildren, Celia Mercedes Solinap Laplace and Alexander Willard Solinap Laplace.
He was the youngest of 6 children and was the last surviving of all his siblings. He graduated from medical school at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila in 1959. He then traveled around the world with his soon to be wife, Perla, and several close friends from medical school to complete their medical residencies in North Carolina. Completely alone in a foreign country, the dear friends stuck together and experienced life as foreigners in a new country. It changed his view of the world.
After completing training, Daniel and Perla returned to the Philippines, got married and had their children, Joseph and Lea. In 1968, they returned to the US and chose Norfolk as their permanent home. He worked at Portsmouth General Hospital Emergency room until 1982 and then joined his wife at Associated Family Physicians and practiced family medicine until he retired in 2008. He was the true generalist. He trained as a surgeon and worked in the ER for many years. He could stitch up any laceration, take out an appendix, deliver a baby, set a broken arm, treat an ear infection, and most importantly, he would console the sick and their families. He loved his work as a physician and he loved his patients.
He was a founding member of the Philippine Medical Association, a service organization that was started to provide medical care for the migrant workers on the Eastern Shore. He was an avid sportsman. He loved to fish, to play tennis, and to golf. He loved music and he loved to dance. He was the most devoted husband, father and grandfather. He never left his wife’s side. They lived, worked, and did everything together. He was a friend and a comfort to all.
We thank all his friends, family, colleagues, and physicians for their love and support over the years. We thank all of our nurses and staff who have been our family for 50 years now. We thank Mercing who cared for all of us until her death in 2002. We thank the nurses and staff of Kindred Home health and Hospice who made his last days peaceful and comfortable. Most especially, we thank Lilia Dela Pieza for her loving care during the last years of his life.
Friends and family are invited to a public visitation on December 23, 2021 from 4-6 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6239 East Virginia Beach Boulevard, Norfolk, 23502.
Due to the Covid-19 concerns, the family will have a private memorial service on December 24th at Woodlawn Funeral Home.
In lieu of gifts or flowers, please just take a moment to remember a fond memory of Dan or make a donation to your favorite charity.
