On January 1, 2013, Doris H., Horan, a great lady, went home to be with her Lord. She was born on September 4, 1924, raised primarily in Georgia, and Alabama, later moved to Norfolk, where she met and married her late husband, William T. Horan (June 23, 1998). She had four children, Leslie W. Horan, (Mary), Michael E. Horan, (Annie), Susan C. Campbell and Lisa L. Horan.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, Buin E. And Eliza Brooks, a favorite Aunt and Uncle, Charles and Lilly Young, her granddaughter Melissa Campbell, and great-grandson Landon Bruce Amey, as well as many beloved In-Laws, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Nieces, Nephews and friends.
She is survived not only by her children and their spouses, but also her grandchildren from Leslie; Stephanie, Christine, James Patrick, Christopher, and Angie. From Michael; Sarah, From Susan; Kim (Noah), Stephanie (Billy), Rick (Whitney), and Steven. Numerous Great-grandchildren, and Rick Campbell whom she considered to be and loved as a son, also remain behind to honor her memory. Lastly, she had a very special pen pal in Utah, named Alice Anderson, whom she began writing to at the age of ten, and sent a last Christmas card to before she became ill in 2012. 78 years of friendship shared through letters.
She retired after over 40 years of Accounting for the Civil Service, as well as many years spent at H&R Block. She attended and graduated from many night courses to improve her abilities in different fields of interest. Her passions were sewing and traveling, which enabled her to see over half the world. Since she also deeply loved her church, for over 20 years she dedicated many pre-computer hand-written hours as their treasurer.
She maintained a household, raised 4 children, and helped everyone she could along the way. She taught us how to love, laugh and to forgive, that true value comes from within, hard work will not kill us, and to always put our doubts, fears, angers, pain and suffering in God’s hands. He will always take care of us.
She will forever be missed.
Family will greet friends at Woodlawn Funeral Home, from 6 to 8 pm on January 7, 2013. A graveside service will be held the following day, Tuesday January 8, at 12 noon at Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends and family will gather at McKendree United Methodist Church for a reception following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to McKendree United Methodist Church.
