

Virginia Beach–Evelyn S. Carper (“E.T.”to close family and friends) died Monday, April 27, at Oakwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, of cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family. She was 84 years old. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack, who died March 19, 2009, and her daughter, Lynn Carper Vinson, who died May 10, 2004. Born Evelyn Taylor Smith, in Salem, VA, she attended Roanoke College and then wrote for the Roanoke Times where she met Jack. They were married January 23, 1948. She became a teacher, and teaching became her lifelong passion . After moving to California and back to Roanoke, E.T. and Jack moved to Virginia Beach in 1966.She then began teaching 4th and 5th grade at Kempsville Elementary School, where she remained until her retirement in 1981. She touched many lives, and was well-loved. Her gentle, patient manner affected us all and we are better people for having been part of her life. She is survived by: son, Mark Carper of Winthrop, MA; daughter, Catherine Carper Fultz of Claymont, DE; grandsons Craig Ripski of Claymont; Evan Carper of Brookline, MA; ;Nathaniel Carper-Young of Winthrop; and granddaughter Allison Ripski of Claymont. A graveside service will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at 12:00 noon. All are welcome to attend. A reception will follow .
