Obituary of James Stephen Latham
After a long life of 90 years well-lived, went peacefully asleep into the arms of his loving Savior, Jesus Christ on May 23, 2022. Jim was born to the late Robert Boyd & Irene Farrell Latham on Oct. 8, 1931 in Del Carmen Pampanga, Philippines. Jim spent 9 happy years there and traveled 5 times across the Pacific Ocean back to their home town of Hudson Falls, NY. His love of the water brought him to his life career of serving 21 years in the US Navy, retiring as Master Chief (E9) Radarman in 1971. He also worked as an Accountant at “The Atlantic Group” in Norfolk. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Dorothy (Dottie) of 61 Years and 3 children: Stephen Latham (Andrea), Patrick & Laurie; grandchildren, Stephen Latham, Joshua (Jessica); great-grandson, Riley Gray Latham, extended family members and friends. He was predeceased by his only brother, Robert Latham and grandson, Coleman Sample. Jim & Dottie were founding members of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in 1975 and are active members to this day. Jim served on the Stewardship, Finance, Men's Club & Welcoming Committees. He was also Treasurer & President of the Sunshine Club (seniors). Jim’s Catholic faith strengthened with involvement in Charismatic Prayer group, Renew, Small Christian Community, Men’s Cursillo, Marriage Encounter, CEN (Christian Ecumenical Network), Lector, Eucharistic Minister & Choir member. He was also an active member of both the Knights of Columbus, Fr. Nicholas J. Habets Council #4632 & Fr. Habets Assembly #1505 of Va. Beach. Special thanks to Sentara Hospice, Sentara Homecare and Kindred Hospice, especially Beth, Elaine and Lisa. A big hug for our son Patrick who did so much for his "Pops". Jim & Dottie were loving parents, grandparents & great grandparent. Jim always enjoyed senior bus trips, driving cross country, Navy cruises to 25 different countries and on his own 14 ft. boat nearby. He loved playing games with his family and his favorite card game “Hand & Foot” with his senior friends. A Mass of Resurrection will be held Tuesday, May 31st at 11:00 AM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1396 Lynnhaven Parkway, Va. Beach, VA. 23453. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association or St. Vincent DePaul Society at Holy Spirit Church. A reception will follow at church after the Military Honors and burial in the Columbarium. The service will be streamed live on line holyspiritvb.org-worship-live stream liturgies.
