

Virginia Beach - Joyce McCarthy, 73, passed away in Sentara Princess Anne Hospital October 17, 2012. The former Joyce Valle was born in Prospect Park, N.J. on December 6, 1938 and grew up in Hawthorne, N.J. She was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Tannie Valle and one sister, Joan Capozzoli. Mrs McCarthy was a graduate of Hawthorne High School and an avid roller skating champion winning the Intermediate USA Ladies National Speed Skating Championship in Akron, Ohio in 1953. She was an outstanding softball player and coached a youth softball team to a championship in 1971.
Mrs McCarthy was a devoted homemaker and a long time employee of the Hylton Boys and Girls Club in Dale City, Va. She is survived by her husband, Al McCarthy of Va Beach; a son, Edward McCarthy of Haymarket, Va; a daughter, Sheryl Cooney of Carrollton, Ga and six grandchildren, Cailah Cooney, Jaclyn Valle McCarthy, Samantha Cooney, twin boys Sean and Steven McCarthy and Joseph Cooney.
Mrs McCarthy and her husband retired to Va Beach in 1998 after her husband served 22 years with the USAF, 18 years in the civil service and have lived here for 14 years.
A memorial service will be held at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, 2208 Princess Anne Rd at Noon on Saturday, October 27, 2012. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery on a date to be determined later.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Hylton Boys and Girls Club, 5070 Dale Blvd, Dale City, Va. 22193.
