

Virginia Beach - Mary N. Hommel, daughter of the late Hattie Troutman and Martin Hommel, age 87, passed away September 22, 2011. She was preceded in death by five brothers and seven sisters, and is survived by one sister, Hazel Fairbrother, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary graduated from Mifflinburg (PA) high school in 1941. She proudly served her country in the U.S. Navy for 24 years, which included WWII, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam Era, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. Her exemplary patriotism and service earned her several Good Conduct awards, the National Defense Service medal, and was elected Navy Pride of the Year. Mary enjoyed playing bingo in the local area with her many friends and had a great love of black Labrador retriever dogs, especially Chief and Buddy. She was a member of the Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, the Order of Eastern Star, the FRA organization, and the American Legion Post 410 (Mifflinburg). The family will receive friends Saturday, October 1, 2011, from 11 AM until the start of services at 1 PM in the chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., with the Rev. Ted David officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens with full U.S. Navy honors. Condolences may be offered on line at www.woodlawngroup.com.
