

Warren “Beanie” Powers, 84, of Norfolk, passed away peacefully at his home with his family at his bedside on June 22, 2015. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Helen Russell Powers; a son, Joel Warren Powers; and a brother, Wayne Kermit Powers. Beanie was born in Norfolk to the late Joel Spurlock Powers and Almeda Balance Powers on December 29, 1930. He was raised in the Broad Creek Village section of Norfolk and he graduated from Norview High School in 1949. After high school he joined the United States Marine Corp. In 1956, he began working for the C&P Telephone Co. of Virginia, from which he retired in 1991, after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, and in his younger years, an avid fisherman; especially for speckled trout in the Lynnhaven River. He was also a fan of the Washington Redskins and the New York Yankees. Beanie is survived by his two sons, Tommy Lee Powers and John Montier Powers, both of Norfolk and sisters-in-law Sarah Russell and Mary Bess of Chesapeake, Bootsie Guess of Virginia Beach and Arletta Powers of Urbanna, VA. Nephews and nieces he is survived by include: Gary and Cathy Russell, Eddie and Pam Bess, Roy and Kim Meinberg, all of Chesapeake, Marvin and Theresa Parker of Richmond, Patsy McLean of Virginia Beach, David and Leona Roach of Kitty Hawk, NC, Brad Guess of Virginia Beach, and Paul and Cindy DeYongh of Virginia Beach. Beanie had many friends that will dearly miss his great sense of humor and kind, wonderful personality. A celebration of his life will be held at 7:00pm Tuesday, July 7th, 2015, at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk.
