He was born on April 7th, 1956, in Rossburg, Ohio to the late Robert Kaffenberger and Rita (McEowen) Young.
In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his brother Ronald and granddaughter Audrianna Rene.
Michael graduated from Mississinawa Valley High School in 1974 before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1975. He dutifully served his country as an Airborne Meteorological Atmosphere Specialist at McClellan Air Force Base, California until his Honorable Discharge from active duty in 1979. After separating from the United States Air Force, he began his career as an Electronics Technician for the Department of Defense—first at McClellan Air Force Base, California then transferring to Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma in 1997. He finished out his civil service career joining the Federal Aviation Administration in 2001 as an Airway Transportation Systems Specialist, ultimately retiring in 2017. In total, Michael dedicated over 39 years of service to his country.
Michael was a tremendous multisport athlete. Whether it was basketball, boxing, track and field, softball, or golf, his intense competitive spirit was only outshined by his gracious sportsmanship and humble attitude. He shared his love for sports with his family and dedicated himself to coaching every sport both of his children played. To strangers he was an often-intimidating mountain of a man with a gruff exterior and stoic personality. Family and close friends knew him as a gentle giant with a giving heart, who didn’t talk much, but when he did, people stopped to listen.
Michael is survived by his stepfather Ronald, brothers Robert Jr, Jack (Becky), Steven (Tammy), sister Lora (Perry), sister-in-law Dawn, son Michael Jr (Kyra), daughter Ashley (Wes), and grandchildren Brooklynn, Brayden, Reid, Madison, Kayden, and Cassey.
A graveside service for Michael will be held Tuesday, October 26th, 2021 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Ft. Gibson National Cemetery, 1423 Cemetery Rd, Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma 74434.
