Alma was born on the family homestead in Willowbunch, SK. One of many children before and after her, in fact two sets of twins. The family eventually settled in Prince, SK. where they raised this large family on a small plot of land.
Alma married Keith Bendall in 1953, giving birth to two sons, Don and Dwight. She worked for the next 35 years as a nurses aid, now called a CCa, in various cities throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta. Her last job was at BDCC in Battleford where she went off on disability, with back issues. This issue would plague her for the rest of her life. During this time, she lived with her mom, Lillian Lapointe whom she cared for till she was placed in River Heights Lodge. Alma remained the primary caregiver till her death. Her time spent living with Cookum were one of her happiest times. They often would play Yahtzee to pass the time. She also provided palliative care to her sisters Patsy Rector and Doris Switzer. She excelled in this caregiver role and never complained.
During this time, she grew a large garden at Cochin, which the family enjoyed the fruits of her labor. She and Sylvia Bailey would pick blueberries around Beauval every year on their annual retreat. She also enjoyed the grandchildren and often took them to the fair and McDonalds. She moved to Saskatoon and assisted Dwight and Kathleen with a new baby, Joshua and Dylan. There she partook in making soup and Bannock at the University for the Metis elders.
We always called her "the gypsy" as no grass grew under her feet, she moved so many times. In fact, Willie Nelson's song "On the road again" suited her well! Her last move was to Lloydminster where she resided in the same building as her sister Josephine, till she was moved in to care. She remained active with friends and family, doing her crafts, bingo, her favorite past time, and road trips till she gave up driving.
As her health deteriorated, she moved into Pioneer Lodge, in December 2024. She was able to read, knit, and watch the Jays.
A special mention to Kathy Brown, her godchild/niece who assisted Alma in every way, provided her with support, an angel in disguise. Thank you. Alma was kind and friendly with people, but she did not mince words if she felt something was wrong. We always said this may have been a family trait!
The family would like to express their gratitude to the fine nursing care she received in her final days, the doctors and nurses, especially Shelby and Kristin who were exceptional. Memorial donations may be made to the Cancer Foundation.
