Velma Jean Baptiste-Willett

In loving memory of Velma Jean Baptiste-Willett 77 years died peacefully on Monday February 15, 2021 at the Royal University Hospital. Predeceased by her father David Baptiste, mother Kate Tootoosis, brothers Jehu, Bernard, and sister Violet. Survived by her husband Enos, sons Carman (Sunni), Cameron (Velma), and Colin, grandchildren Alina, Jordan, Tara, Dallas, Braden and Brennan, and great-granddaughter Aurelia. Also survived by her brothers Clarence, Harvey, Elvis, Leon and sisters Pearleen, Noreen, Paulette, Sharon and Davina. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and godchildren. Velma was also very close with many ministry friends in the local Saskatoon area who were an integral part of her life in her later years.

Velma was an accomplished Cree curriculum developer and a respected elder, having taught for many years at the University of Saskatchewan, First Nations University of Canada after having completed a Master’s degree in Educational Foundations. A woman with a deep and enduring faith in her creator, Velma loved nothing more than keeping in touch with friends and family across Saskatchewan and across the country. Anyone who knew her will remember the many cards, letters, notes and gifts Velma was constantly sending the people she loved. Velma also loved to travel across the prairies visiting friends and family and attending many powwows, conferences and events. A survivor of Indian residential school, Velma worked tirelessly to maintain the Cree language throughout her life.

Traditional wake for Velma was held on Tuesday, February 16th from the Elder's Hall in Little Pine First Nation, with Funeral Services following Wednesday, February 17th at 11:oo a.m. Velma is laid to rest at the Little Pine Cemetery with her family. I will always remember your kind ways and your kind words, I will miss you alot I'll miss our conversations about everything we talked about I will continue to live a good clean healthy lifestyle for my kids and myself, I continue my education like we talked about and dedicate my few years to you and make you proud .
