Bill Bond Gussler, 91, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, as well as a retired Navy Senior Chief, entered into Eternal Rest on Friday, January 6, 2017. He was born on October 6, 1925, in Catlettsburg, Kentucky; the only child of William and Phoebe Gussler. He was a member of Trident Baptist Church in Goose Creek. Bill was a military enthusiast who proudly served his country during the World War II Conflict, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He proudly defended all that we hold dear. His 20 years as a sailor were some of the happiest of his life. The military suited his sense of order and his code of loyalty. Bill was a patient and loving husband and father. He was married for 61 years to the love of his life, Norma Joanne. He was the proud father of two daughters; Catherine Domrose of Goose Creek, and Debra Cole (John) of Summerville. He was a grandfather to Billy Domrose (Casey) of Massachusetts; Michelle Surbaugh of Ohio; Rhynne Owens (Thomas) of Summerville; Keree Domrose of Simpsonville; and Courtney Cole of Summerville. Bill also has 11 great-grandchildren. After 20 years of military service and relocating his family several times, he chose to retire from the Navy in 1967 and make Goose Creek his home. He worked many jobs in the area, including Dentyns Shipyard, Santee Cooper and Cummins Engine; however, his favorite was working at Goose Creek High School. He loved GCHS and the Gators. For many years, he was an active member of the Athletic Booster Club and was instrumental in building the original concession stand on the football field. Until he no longer could, he attended Gator football and basketball games and supported all aspects of Goose Creek High. In 1992, after working 10 years for the school, Bill retired for good so he could spend time at home with his wife, and celebrate and enjoy his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. Full military honor services for Bill Gussler will be on Saturday, January 14, 2017, 12:00pm, at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC, 29406. A visitation will begin at 11:00am prior to the service. The military honor burial will be at Carolina Memorial Gardens immediately following the service. While flowers will be graciously accepted, donations may be made in Bill’s name to Trident Baptist Church, PO Box 1059, Goose Creek, SC, 29445. Carolina Memorial Park, Funerals, and Cremations has been entrusted with the family’s arrangements.
