

David Luther Smith, 90, of Summerville, SC, passed away on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 in Summerville surrounded by family. He was born on November 1,1934 to the late Clarence and Cleia Smith in Cades, S.C.
He is survived by his sister, Joane Woolley, of Kings Tree, S.C; two daughters, Gwen Irelan (Claude) of Summerville; Valerie Salvo of Johns Island; his son, Kim Walsh of North Charleston; 8 Grandchildren, Tiffani Szemly (Mike); Melissa Beach; David Beach; Richard Wingo; Heather Eads; Kurt Walsh; Summer Walsh; Sean Walsh; and several great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife Joanne M Smith; son Howard Walsh; father, Clarence L Smith; mother, Cleia M Smith; four brothers, Gerald Smith; Hugh Smith; Bruce Smith, Clarence ( Jr ) Smith, and sister, Patricia Smith.
David spent 4 years in the Navy stationed aboard the USS Bauer Transport Ship out of San Diego, CA as an electrician. There, he met his wife Joanne and her 4 children. They were married on April 8,1958 and moved to Goose Creek, S.C. where David’s post Navy career began in life Insurance sales. He retired as District Manager of Public Savings Life Insurance in 1996.
David was a lifetime member of the Goose Creek Masonic Lodge #401 since 1968. He was also a member of the Omar Shrine of Mt. Pleasant.
David was an avid hunter, fisherman and often traveled the country with his wife. He loved life immensely and enjoyed the good times with friends and family.
A visitation for friends and family will be held on Saturday, September 6, 12:30PM at the Carolina Memorial Gardens in the Mausoleum Chapel, 7113 Rivers Ave., North Charleston, South Carolina 29406 located in the back of the cemetery. The Life Well Celebrated service will commence at 1:00PM along with a Masonic Service in the Mausoleum Chapel. Entombment will follow at Valor Mausoleum with U.S. Navy Honors.
