

Doris Gregory Sheriff, age 94, resident of Columbia, SC, passed away at home on Wednesday morning, October 4, 2023. She was born in Clinton, SC and was the daughter of Hampton Lee Gregory and Sue Mae Rushton Gregory.
She is survived by her son, David W. Sheriff of Columbia, SC who also was her cherished caregiver; her daughter-in-law, Laura Sheriff of Newberry, SC; three grandchildren, R. Gregory Sheriff (Abigail) of Durham, NC, Kristina Winchester of The UK, and Sarah Mills of Newberry, SC; sister-in-law, Ellenda Sheriff of Prosperity, SC; six great-grandchildren: Rory, Gavin, Molly and Levi Sheriff, CJ Davis and James Mills; as well as many nieces and nephews; and part-time caregiver, Beverly Landers. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hampton and Sue Gregory; her son, Michael C Sheriff; her sisters, Barbara G. Childs, and Ruby G. Williams; and two brother-in-laws, Roy E. Sheriff and John H. Williams.
Doris' accomplishments extended beyond her home life. She was a real estate broker and VA appraiser who had made an impact in the South Carolina and North Carolina real estate industry. Notably, she was an elected Realtor of the Year in 1994 by the Piedmont Regional Association of Realtors. She also served as vice president of Region 5 for the South Carolina Association of Realtors and was appointed by Gov. Carroll Campbell to represent the real estate industry on the first SC Appraisers Board where she served as Vice Chair. Doris also served on the CHATS Committee (Charleston Area Transportation Study) as well as having served the city of Charleston for water and waste eminent domain.
Throughout her life, she worked diligently for charitable causes such as the Daughters of the Nile Milcah Temple No. 77, a philanthropic organization that benefits Shriner's Children's™. She was also president of the Pilot Club of Greater Charleston. Doris' generosity extended to her church. She was an active member of the Columbia Midtown Seventh-day Adventist Church, serving as the first Treasurer, Deaconess, and on the committee for Adventist Community Thrift Shop (ACTS). She had a heart for service and was a natural leader, serving on the Hanahan school board as well as the City of Hanahan and Berkeley Planning Commission. Her many achievements were acknowledged by those she served and admired.
Friends and family are invited to attend the graveside service and interment at Carolina Memorial Gardens on October 15, 2023, at 1:00 PM.
