George Robert Maynard Sr., age 90, of James Island, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. Born on January 25, 1935, in Bellwood, West Virginia, George was the beloved son of the late Thomas Alva Maynard and Helen May Carter Maynard.
George led a life defined by service, dedication, and love. He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Theresa Healy Maynard. Their love story began in Mercury, Nevada, where they met while both working at an atomic weapons testing site—Theresa in the badge office, and George as a young U.S. Army mechanic. Their bond stood the test of time and life’s many journeys.
After serving four years in the Army, George transitioned to the United States Air Force, where he dedicated the remainder of his military career. He served with distinction during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars and retired honorably as a Master Staff Sergeant specializing in aircraft mechanics.
Following his military service, George continued to pursue his passion for aviation and mechanics. He attended Trident Technical College, where he became a licensed welder and later shared his knowledge as an instructor. He also earned his Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification, which enabled him to work for over 17 years maintaining aircraft aboard the historic USS Yorktown at Patriots Point. His contributions were also instrumental in the upkeep of the USS Laffey. George also will be remembered by his fellow veterans as a life member of the James Island VFW Post 445.
George’s talents extended beyond mechanics. In 1984, he proudly took first place in the Charleston Shark Club’s tournament with an 86-pound blacktip shark. He was a man of many interests—computers, teaching, fishing, and, most of all, time spent with his beloved wife and their cherished dogs, Gidgy and Muffy.
He is lovingly remembered by his granddaughter, Christina Maynard, and her parents, Paul and Rebecca Lind, as well as his sister, Lena Webb.
George was preceded in death by his three sons, George Jr., John, and Timothy Maynard; his grandson, Robert Maynard; and his three sisters, Rebecca Eaton, Mona Maynard, and Herma Adkins.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Ave., North Charleston, SC 29406, with a memorial service to follow at 1:00 PM in the chapel. Military Honors will be rendered at the mausoleums of Carolina Memorial Gardens immediately following the service.
George will be remembered for his gentle spirit, unwavering dedication, and the quiet strength with which he loved his family, served his country, and contributed to his community.
