Captain James E. Doffin, Jr. US Navy CHC (ret) passed from this life on September 17, 2022. He was born in Hamlet, NC on August 23, 1936. The family moved to Charleston in 1938 and remained there throughout his life.
James graduated from Chicora High School, Furman University, Southeaster Seminary, and Princeton with a Master's Degree in Theology. He loved his college experiences and often said that Furman made him a lifetime leader. James was a voracious reader. He was a Navy Chaplain for 27 1/2 years and loved the Navy. He served with the Marine Corps in Vietnam. After retirement he taught Bible Classes at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Mt. Pleasant and in Goose Creek and was very fond of all the participants. He was also a member of 1st Scots Presbyterian Church.
James in survived by his loving wife Nancy Johnston Doffin; son Alan (Anita); daughter Donna Hicks (Rob); grandsons Joshua (Brittany) and Jenson; step sons Billy and Vince Grindstaff; and step grandson Levi Grindstaff (Kaycie); sister Peggy Lewis; and special Niece Christine Denise Gardner.
James was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters Susie Prosser and Sandra Greenhill.
A visitation will be held for James on Wednesday September 21, 2022 at 1:00 PM, followed by a chapel funeral service at 2:00 and a graveside service with Military Honors afterwards. Carolina Memorial Funeral Home and Gardens, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29406.
