

Miss Jo Carolyn Hammond, 78, of both Charleston and Columbia, SC passed away December 24, 2014 after a prolonged illness. A graveside service will be held Sunday December 28, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Carolina Memorial Gardens, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC. The daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Herbert Hammond, she was born in Charleston on March 1, 1936. She is predeceased by her parents, an older brother, a nephew, and a niece. She is survived by a younger brother, three nephews, three great nephews, three great nieces, and two goddaughters. A graduate of Chicora High School and Columbia College, she taught school for 35 years. In Columbia, she taught at Forest Lake Elementary School for 24 years, where she was also named the first "Teacher of the Year". She was a member of Kappa Kappa Iota, Zeta Conclave, a National Sorority of Educators, where she served as State President for one year. A lifelong member of Cherokee Place United Methodist Church in Charleston, and attended Bethel United Methodist Church in Columbia, Carolyn was blessed throughout her life with a loving family and friends who were there for her day and night, year after year.
