Rhodes “Sammy” Rogers, Sr., 96, of Summerville, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. A man who never met a stranger and was always the first to say “I love you,” Sammy leaves behind a legacy of generosity and devotion to his family.
Born in the rural community of Honey Hill on April 7, 1929, Sammy was the son of the late Samuel and Mary Belle Shuler Rogers. As a young man he developed an extraordinary work ethic and took immense pride in being a provider. Throughout his life, he remained strongly independent, willing to take on any job or challenge necessary to ensure his family was well-cared for. This determination led him to a 34-year career with White Stack Towing as a Tugboat Engineer, a role he spoke of with deep affection for both the work and his crewmates.
A dedicated outdoorsman, Sammy was a member of the Buckhorn Hunt Club for 25 years and previously hunted at the Edisto and Limehouse Hunt Clubs. He found great joy in gardening, specifically growing roses, fig trees, and vegetables. Above all, Sammy was a natural caregiver and a man of immense generosity, often providing a home and support for extended family members.
He is survived by his children, Shirley Hinson of Summerville, Glenda Rogers of Goose Creek, and Rhodes “Rocky” Rogers, Jr. (Lanora) of Moncks Corner; his beloved sister in law, Linda Miller Bradley of Arizona; his grandchildren, James Hinson III (Angela), Michael Rogers (Meredith), Adrienne Rogers, Tiffany Johnson (Chad), and Crystal Russo; his great-Grandchildren: James Hinson IV, Caroline Hinson, Hunter Anderson, Piper Anderson, Renee Johnson, Jenna Rogers, and Noelle Russo as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Miller Rogers; his second wife, Juanita Coates Rogers; and his brothers, Logan and Otto Rogers.
Relatives and friends of Sammy Rogers are invited to attend his Funeral Service at 3:00 PM, Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Ave., North Charleston, SC 29406. Burial will follow in Carolina Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until the time of service on Saturday.
