Benjamin I Hendler

Benjamin Israel Hendler, of Boca Raton, Fla., died on Saturday November 24, 2012 after a short illness. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and an adoring grandpa (“pop pop”). Son of the late Nat and Sarah Hendler, Benjamin was born on February 15, 1934, in Bronx, N.Y. His family moved to Spring Valley, N.Y., 1948, where he graduated from Spring Valley High School. He attended Fordham University, receiving a B.S. in 1955 and later earned an M.B.A. at Pace University. Benjamin was married to Sondra Aronowitz in 1953, and, after serving in a MASH unit in Korea from 1956 to 1958, he and Sondra settled in Spring Valley to raise a family. He worked as a pharmacist and for Lederle Laboratories until his retirement in 1993.

Benjamin leaves behind his wife, Sondra, and three sons; Dr. Jay (Laura) Hendler, Mitchell (Beth) Hendler, and Scott (Jane) Hendler, and four grandchildren; Gregory, Matthew, Rachel and Leah, nephews; Michael and Steven Newman, Eugene and Jay Glassman, Stephen and Jerry Waxberg, and several cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Helen Newman.

Benjamin will be most remembered for the love he had for his family and his enjoyment of family gatherings and special occasions. He always looked forward to visits from family after he and his wife moved to Florida in 1994. He remained active in a variety of sports throughout his life, enjoying swimming, handball, racquetball, and tennis. Benjamin was also active in several organizations. He was the United Way coordinator for many years at Lederle laboratories, and after his retirement was a board member for his condominium association and served as an ombudsman for the State of Florida to review nursing homes throughout southeastern Florida.

A memorial service will be held at Star of David Memorial Gardens and Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at 10:30AM. Family and friends may visit the home of Sondra Hendler, following the service.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions in Benjamin’s memory may be given to Hospice by the Sea, 1531 W. Palmetto Park Rd., Boca Raton, FL 33486.
