A proud graduate of Hector High School, Marcy served as the Salutatorian of her class. After graduation, she moved to Little Rock to attend Little Rock Business College, and upon completing her studies, she began her career at the Arkansas State Treasurer’s Office.
During her early years in Little Rock, Marcy lived in a downtown boarding house where she met fellow boarder Norman Butler—the love of her life. Their feelings were mutual, and after a year of courtship they were married in 1951. They shared 40 wonderful years of marriage until Norman’s passing in 1991.
Shortly after their wedding, Marcy and Norman opened their first business, Butler School Supply Company, followed by BUSSCO Library Supply Company. Norman fondly referred to Marcy as his “Secret Weapon” in business, as customers cherished visiting with her. She genuinely cared for people—talking with them about their families, interests, and churches—while business conversations often came second. Many customers became lifelong friends.
Marcy and Norman were devoted members of Lakewood United Methodist Church and the George Martin Sunday School Class. Marcy joyfully taught children’s Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for decades. She was deeply involved in the church’s Cassette Ministry for shut-ins, as well as UMYF youth ministries. The United Methodist Women held a special place in her heart, and she was profoundly honored to receive both their Friendship Award and their Lifetime Award.
For more than 50 years, Marcy was a member of the infamous Idlewilde Bridge Club—an institution known as much for its camaraderie as for its card games. She was a dedicated Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Troop Leader, and an enthusiastic exerciser, especially enjoying walks around Lake #3 and time spent in the Ladies Exercise Class at church, which she helped establish.
Marcy was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her four sisters: Emogene Coffman, Agnes Cochran, Kathleen Goates, and Bobbie Kinslow.
She is survived by her son, Tom Butler; her daughter, Terri Watkins (Dr. Charles Watkins); and a brother-in-law, Tommy Kinslow.
Pallbearers: Steve Ambort, Jerry Butler, Mike Stormes, Steve Cochran, Eddy Kinslow, and Andy Kinslow.
