Edwin David Calva passed away peacefully on Monday, April 30 at his home. He has now been reunited with his beloved wife Susan Congdon. Ed was a devoted and excellent caregiver to Susan until her recent passing and their devotion to each other was inspiring to see. Ed’s life with Susan was one filled with joy whether it was taking care of their many rescued Bassett hounds or spending time together shopping for antiques.
Edwin was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on November 15, 1960. He was the son of the late David and Theofillia Zajac Calva and grew up in the Sylvan Hills/Sherwood areas. He graduated from Catholic High School where he excelled in JrROTC. Ed’s chosen career was serving the Pulaski County Special School District as a certified HVAC technician.
Ed was the kind of man who was always willing to help his family and friends with their “chore” lists. He had the solution for problems around the house or your vehicle and the necessary tools to fix it. If you called and asked for help Ed’s response was always what time do I need to show up?
He was blessed with many friends who he loved to spend time with whether it was at the RAD Deer Lease hunting camp, LRCH class of 1979 breakfast club, his motorcycle crew or his work buddies.
He had a passion for World War II history and with that knowledge was able to rattle off the names of ships, weapons and their battles. He possessed a great understanding of the history of firearms including all their modifications over time.
Ed had particularly good relationships with all of his nephews and nieces. Each have their favorite “uncle Ed” story. They found him comfortable and positive to be with. He was a patient teacher. He connected with them through their interests sports, family life, cars or even in video games (WWII). Nephews Brandon and Curtis will remember his particular laugh. The “Ed” laugh. His niece Amelia loved Ed and Susan’s sense of humor that made hard things just a little easier. What a gift to have. Ed’s way with words is what nephew Asa remembers. Asa was 16 years old before he finally realized what “ go play on the freeway” meant. His niece Amanda held him awe for years when he told her that he “ dodged the raindrops” during the trip to see her.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife Susan Congdon, his parents and Andrea Smith(niece). He is survived by his siblings: Anita Smith(Steve),Daniel Calva(Joni),and Marcia Hancock( Brad). He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Brandon Calva(Megan), Amanda Hancock, Curtis Calva, Asa Hancock(Megan), and Amelia Smith. Grand nieces : Elise, Emily,Macy,Michael and Holden. He is also survived by three well behaved and incredibly spoiled basset hounds: Emma, Lexie, and Clyde.
A celebration of Ed’s and Susan’s lives will be held at a later time. Many thanks to all the family and friends who have loved and supported Ed and Susan throughout their lives.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association or the Pulaski County Humane Society.
