John Peter Turner of Miami, FL, passed away on Wednesday, June 16th, 2016 at a Seasons Hospice Inpatient Center in Miami, Florida. He was 56. He was born on March, 31st, 1960 in Miami, Florida. He graduated from Miami Edison in 1978. In December 15th, 1999, John married Anna Reyes in Guam. He was the son of Joann Spicuzza and Joseph Turner. A brother to Jeffrey Turner, late Jeanmarie Turner, Krista Jugs, and George Myers.
He’s the father of six beautiful Filipino children, Mark Tan, Marie Grace Tan, James Tan, John Tan, William Turner, and Jannah Turner. John was diagnosed with a disease that completely decimated his way of life. He had been working as an insurance inspector six days a week, 12 years straight, but suddenly his body was not responding properly.
When he tried to give his body simple, automatic commands, like, “Walk” or “Hold this,” he would notice that part of him was lagging behind. The left side of John’s body started to drag. But why?
It was a brain tumor in his right frontal lobe.
John was blindsided when doctors told him he had glioblastoma multiforme, which is automatically a Stage 4 cancer prognosis. Even though only 0.008% of Americans are diagnosed with GBM, they represent 2% of all U.S. cancer deaths. It’s easily the most aggressive, cancer induced-human assassin. (Sen. Ted Kennedy and Vice President Biden’s son both passed away due to GBM4 tumors.)
Needless to say, GBM is the most aggressive form of primary malignant brain tumor. Less than a third of people diagnosed survive more than a year with the disease. For men over 40, like John, the outlook is even more bleak.
It’s understandable to ask, “Why me?” Was it due to an unhealthy lifestyle? No. Medical science has yet to pinpoint GBM’s cause. With such extremely far removed chances of contracting the disease, it’s consequently one of the least understood forms of cancer.
A celebration of his life will take place this Saturday, June 18th, 2016. The viewing will be from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM and a service from 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM.
