Susan Sarrel was a fierce, strong, intelligent woman who filled her family with love and laughter. She was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey and was raised on Staten Island by the late Beatrice and Paul Rosen with her sister the late Ruth Abrams. Susan graduated from Cornell University, beginning a family legacy that endures through the generations. She was very proud to be among fellow Cornellians like Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Janet Reno, and Dr. Anthony Fauci. Susan had a Master’s Degree from Hunter College.
Susan Rosen married Bernard Sarrel in 1968. She is survived by her husband. Married for nearly 53 years, Bernie was the love of Susan’s life providing her never-ending support and comfort. Susan is also survived by her two children. Her son is Matthew David Sarrel (Erica) who she loved discussing novels with and betting on the Kentucky Derby together, and her daughter is Sallie Beth Sarrel who was Susan’s best friend and co-pilot in life. Susan's grand-dog was the late Frenchie, Elvis. Perhaps, Susan’s greatest joy were her poodles, the late Suro’s Winning Ticket, and the two surviving Bernie’s Bailey Buttons, and her little lovey Dior.
Susan founded and owned Suro, a clothing company where she not only was the CEO of the company but the chief clothing designer. Susan could sew anything but knitting and bridge were a work in progress. Earlier in life, Susan was a wonderful painter known for her driftwood paintings. Though fond of both Gangster Rap and Dolly Parton, Susan’s favorite pastime was reading mystery novels -preferably while drinking a scotch.
She was a long time member of B’nai Jeshurun in Short Hills, New Jersey near her home in Millburn, New Jersey.
Susan lived a difficult life medically. She was a Type 1 Diabetic for 67 years, had endometriosis, and was a stroke survivor. She gave the world the best of what she had to give. Her happiest days were spent on Long Beach Island, New Jersey in the family home or playing tennis at Loveladies Tennis Club. She also loved to swim in the Olympus pool in Hallandale, Florida.
"We hope you are free now, Mommy, and hanging with Nana, Pop-pop and Winning Ticket. Maybe Elvis will give you his paw and his other paw."
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 27 from 2pm at Riverside Gordon, Memorial Chapels 17250 West Dixie Highway, North Miami Beach, Florida, 33162.
A Celebration of Life is planned for later in the year. Susan adored the sun and the sand even after her stroke because of the Beachwheels program. In lieu of flowers please donate to Long Beach Township Beach Patrol Beachwheels program. 609-361-1200 http://www.lbtbp.com/programs/beach-wheels/
