Defranc Barlatier was born on June 10, 1937, in Saint-Louis du Nord, Haiti, to Tavena Barlatier (née Semelfort) and Raoul Barlatier. As the eldest of four children, Defranc quickly assumed the role of a protector and provider, especially after the untimely passing of his father. This responsibility, combined with his drive for a better life, led him to leave his hometown to pursue education in the towns of Port- de-Paix and Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
In 1962, Defranc made the brave decision to leave Haiti for the Bahamas, seeking opportunities that would allow him to support his mother and three sisters back home. His journey was marked by hard work and determination, always with his family in mind. It was in the Bahamas, in 1964, that he met Ermicie Jean-Louis, the woman who would become the love of his life.
In 1977, Defranc embarked on another significant chapter in his life by moving to the United States. This move, like his previous one, was driven by his desire to create a better life for himself and his family. Two years later, in 1979, he and Ermicie were married, solidifying a partnership that would stand the test of time. Together, they built a life filled with love, faith, and hard work. Throughout his life in the U.S., Defranc remained a dedicated worker, often working six to seven days a week. His strong work ethic was matched only by his deep faith. Defranc loved the Lord and was a committed member of his church, where his presence was a source of joy and inspiration to many.
Defranc was known for his joyful spirit, often filling the room with laughter. He had a calm and patient demeanor, seldom showing anger. Family was the center of his world, and he cherished the time spent with loved ones, visiting them nearly every day. Although he and Ermicie never had children of their own, Defranc was a father figure to his nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins and countless other family members, who all looked up to him with love and respect. His guidance and support left a lasting impact on their lives. He also had a passion for politics and was an avid sports fan, with basketball being his favorite. Whether watching a game or discussing the latest political developments, Defranc's enthusiasm was evident.B
Defranc Barlatier leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, and devotion. His memory will forever be cherished by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed, but fondly remembered for the joy and light he brought into the lives of others.
