With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Leyshon ‘Jack’ Williams, who peacefully left us on February 10, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on November 10, 1929, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Leyshon Williams and Dorothy Roberts, Jack lived a life rich with love, learning, and legacy.
A devoted husband to his beloved wife, Juana Williams, Jack shared over 30 years of marriage filled with love and partnership. He was a cherished son, father, grandfather, and friend to many, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Jack’s life’s work was centered around Judo, a martial art he dedicated more than 55 years to mastering, teaching, and sharing with others. As an 8th Dan USA and 7th Dan Kodokan Judo practitioner, Jack was a pillar of the Judo community in the United States and beyond. His journey in Judo took him to the prestigious Kodokan Judo Institute in Japan, where he learned directly from the world’s foremost Judo masters. His expertise and deep understanding of the art went far beyond technique, encompassing wisdom that transcended textbooks and influenced generations of martial artists.
Jack's impact was not only through his own practice but through his guidance of others. He trained countless students, many of whom became champions at national and international levels, and many went on to open their own dojos, continuing his teachings in South Florida. Among his most notable students was Olympian Rhadi Ferguson. Jack’s reputation as a teacher of teachers cemented his legacy as one of the most respected and influential Judo figures in the world.
His legacy will live on through his students and the global Judo community, as well as the enduring values of discipline, honor, and service to others that he embodied. Jack’s profound influence on martial arts and on those who had the privilege of learning from him will never be forgotten.
Jack is survived by his devoted wife, Juana Williams; his children, Johnny, Patty, Moses, Wendy, Angelica, and her spouse Yoel; and his grandchildren, Shon, Sacha, Isabella, and Astrid.
Rest in peace, Sensei Jack Williams. Your wisdom, guidance, and spirit will continue to inspire future generations of Judo practitioners.
