There is one little thing about Auntie Rolande that I know I will always remember.

Even though I was a grown woman, when Auntie Rolande talked to me sometimes, she would use this funny, soft, squeaky little voice, almost like she was talking to a little girl. And she knew exactly what she was doing because she knew it would make me laugh.

Then there was her cat! She had a special little name for that cat, I have to get the name from the family because I don’t want to get it wrong, but even the way she would talk about the cat and say its name would make me laugh.

It wasn’t necessarily what Auntie Rolande said. It was the way she said it. You just had to hear that voice!

And what’s funny is that as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that I do something similar. When I’m being playful with my children and my grandchildren, or telling them a story, this funny little-girl voice comes out of me.

Now I find myself wondering, “Did I get a little bit of that from Auntie Rolande?”

Maybe I did.

And I love that thought, because it reminds me that sometimes the people we love leave pieces of themselves with us without us even realizing it.

Auntie Rolande gave me many things—her advice, her wisdom, and her love—but she also gave me laughter.

And every once in a while, when that silly little voice comes out of me and my family starts laughing, I think I’ll smile a little bigger now…

because maybe there’s a little bit of Auntie Rolande in there too. ❤️
