With deepest sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father, Murray Douglas “Doug” Sigman, Jr., 83- a humble, brilliant oral and maxillofacial surgeon who served this community for decades. Dad lived as a true gentleman, always showing integrity, kindness, and compassion. He brightened our lives with his quick wit, playful humor, engaging conversation, and wise advice, often sharing a funny quote. Quietly charismatic and always kind, Dad passed away peacefully on July 4, 2025, surrounded by family who love him beyond words.
Born March 11, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dad grew up in West Palm Beach and attended Palm Beach High, where he played baseball, football, and basketball, forging lifelong friendships. At Vanderbilt University, he earned a B.A. in Chemistry with a minor in Biology, was captain of the baseball team, and served as president of Sigma Nu. He graduated with honors from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, completed postgraduate oral surgery studies at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry, and completed his surgical residency at Louisville General Hospital.
Dad ran a private practice and served as chief of Dentistry and Oral Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, and Doctor’s Hospital. He dedicated 45 years to Good Samaritan, serving on many committees, including leadership roles for the medical staff, Indigent Patient Care, and Medical Ethics. For 45 years, he was also a consultant to the Palm Beach County Health Unit, handling complex dental cases. He joined the Health Care Task Force of Palm Beach County and was determined to expand access to urgent and emergency care for people experiencing poverty. After 23 years in private practice, he focused full-time on improving healthcare access for underserved patients, working for the Health Department in Belle Glade, Lantana, and West Palm Beach, providing extensive clinical and surgical care. For years, he offered free oral cancer screenings to underserved individuals and Major League baseball players, and he educated medical care providers in all settings.
Dad and Mom shared 52 years of love and laughter, traveling, vacationing at the beach, ski slopes, and Disney, working together, being amazing parents as a team, and sharing a deep connection. Dad and I shared a special bond, the same sense of humor, and views. We loved playing sports together and going to baseball games, golf tournaments, and other events. He was the perfect dad- supportive, always available for conversation, and present at every activity, including tennis, cheerleading, and singing performances. His advice was always wise: Keep your cool, be kind, have integrity, make healthy choices, and remember that silence often has the greatest impact.
Dad cherished his friendships and had friends who matched his humor, intellect, and kindness. He loved to golf and often golfed with his father. He spent Sundays at Grandma’s for family dinner. Recently, Dad enjoyed reading, time with me and Mom, and laughing at their two dogs’ antics while watching the news or sports, always with his rescue pup Lily by his side. Dad’s legacy is one of love, compassion, and integrity. He is deeply loved and we will never stop missing him.
Dad is predeceased by his parents, Dr. Murray Douglas and Rita Sigman. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Sigman; daughter, Tania Sigman (Jason Southard); five siblings - Warren Sigman (Susan), George Sigman (Pat), Patsy Smith (Wayne), Judy Steedly, and Lynn Schaming (Charles); and twelve nieces and nephews.
A memorial ceremony and reception will be held July 19, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Howard-Quattlebaum Funeral Home, 754 US Highway 1, North Palm Beach, FL 33408.
