ANNOUNCEMENT
Christopher John Stringer, 82, a beloved resident of North Vancouver, British Columbia, peacefully passed away on November 10, 2023.
LIFE STORY
Born on July 23, 1941, in Worthing hospital, Sussex, UK, Christopher was the third son of his parents, a cherished brother to Anthony and David. His early years in Sompting, UK, were marked by resilience and strength, surviving the challenges of World War II.
In 1963, Christopher married Gillian Foster, setting forth on a journey that led them across continents. In April 1968, they set sail for Canada, eventually settling in Vancouver in 1976. Christopher's career spanned various roles, from his early days at the Metal Box Company to his impactful years at British Columbia Railway.
An ardent learner, Christopher embraced the evolving landscape of information technology, leaving an indelible mark on the railway industry. He was a trailblazer, installing the first computer-assisted waybilling system across the entire railway system in 1976.
As an organ donor recipient, Christopher and his family are forever grateful to the donor family for the precious gift of life; giving him an extra 21 years of life to enjoy being with his family.
LIVE EVENTS
Christopher's childhood in Sompting was a tapestry of joyous moments with his two brothers, exploring the countryside, climbing Lancing Clump, and embarking on Sunday walks to Southwick. The trio created their own games, from collecting birds' eggs to building cardboard lorries from Cornflake packages.
His father's Sunday football games with Abbey Rovers left an indelible mark, sparking Christopher's lifelong love for the sport. The family's vegetable garden in Sompting not only supplemented their income but also provided a canvas for Christopher to learn the art of cultivating and selling.
In his teenage years, Christopher navigated the transition from North Lancing Primary School to Worthing Grammar School, where his athletic prowess shone in football, cricket, and high jump. The move from Worthing to Hove marked a shift in schools and colors but did not dampen his spirit.
Christopher and Gill's journey to Canada was an adventure that started in Ottawa, where he joined the Canadian data processing service bureau. Their time in Ottawa was marked by resilience and the forging of lifelong friendships with French Canadian colleagues. The move to Toronto brought professional growth, with Christopher working at Smith Transport Company, delving into the realm of programming.
Vancouver became their final home in 1976, a city Christopher fell in love with for its breathtaking landscapes and proximity to extended family on Vancouver Island. The decision to settle in Vancouver marked the beginning of a new chapter, both professionally and personally. Christopher contributed to the community by coaching soccer in North Vancouver, leaving an enduring impact on all he met.
FAMILY
Christopher is survived by his loving wife, Gill, his sons Philip (Lisa) and Jonathan (Holly), and his grandchildren Oliver, Luke, and Dustin. With their arrival, each grandchild gave him a new lease on life.
MEMORIAL
Per Christopher's wishes, there will be no formal memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to North Shore Hospice (https://www.northshorehospicepalliative.com/donate/support-us/), and encourages everyone to complete their organ donation forms.
The Stringer family expresses deep gratitude to all friends, colleagues, and medical professionals who supported Christopher throughout his life.
