of North Vancouver, BC. He died at Lions Gate Hospital on August 18, 2018, from
complications following surgery. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Geoff was born on July 4, 1935, at North Vancouver General Hospital to Wilfred George
Neale and Margaret Grace (Grossman) Hawkes. The family lived in West Vancouver for
a short time before moving to North Vancouver, where he lived ever since. Geoff
married Elizabeth (Bonnie) Lawrence Scull on August 12,1972.
Geoff graduated from North Vancouver High School in 1953, then took some post-
secondary courses in business and accounting. He was also a member in the 6th Field
Engineer Reserve for several years. He worked at PPG Pittsburgh Paint and later at
Stanley Pharmaceuticals. At both places he began as a warehouseman and later
became the warehouse supervisor. He retired in 1998.
His passion was the out-of-doors, racing Star class sail boats at Kitsilano Yacht Club,
hiking, back-packing and canoeing in summer and skiing in winter. He and Bonnie have
hiked the Pacific Crest Trail from Snoqualmie Pass in Washington State north to
Manning Park, BC, canoed the Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson City, YT, and
skied many runs on Grouse Mountain, Whistler Blackcomb and numerous other
mountains in western North America plus a few in Europe. He was a member of the
Grouse Mountain Volunteer Ski Patrol for several years before transferring his talent to
Whistler Blackcomb Volunteer Ski Patrol. His favourite run on Whistler was "The
Saddle". He only gave up skiing in the spring of 2017. His indoor interests included
doing family history research and creating his family tree.
After retirement he and Bonnie enjoyed the pleasures of traveling by cruise ship to
many parts of the world. From circumnavigating Australia to traveling from Vancouver,
BC to New York, NY via the Northwest Passage, he enjoyed it all. But his greatest love
was Bonnie. And he loved to tease her by saying, "Yes Dear", especially when she
proposed another cruise adventure.
He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, William Hugh (Peggie) Maclagan and niece
Linda Isolene (Greg) Natyzak. Survivors include his sister - Elsie Margaret (Peggie)
Maclagan, his wife - Elizabeth Lawrence (Bonnie) Hawkes, his niece - Christina Ann
(Ed) Jerick; his nephews - Ernest Archibald (Debbie) Maclagan, William Shawn (Jana)
Maclagan, Ian Scott (Kathy) Maclagan, and George Patrick (Colleen) Maclagan and 8
grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Geoff's wishes were that there be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers please donate to
BC and Yukon Division MS Society of Canada or the ICU at Lions Gate Hospital.
Geoff had a wry sense of humour and was a wonderfully kind and loving husband and
friend. He is already sorely missed by Bonnie, other family and all who knew him.
