I was so sad to hear the news of Heather’s passing. She was a good friend to me and I have awesome memories of us sharing a glass of wine and trading cat stories. 

My dearest Gran,

It is true.  If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

You raised a loving, funny, and sensitive son who would later become a very important father figure in my life. 

You encouraged your grandson’s adventurous spirit and were always a fan of our own adventures together. I will forever feel your spirit as we cruise around the islands and think of you. I promise to keep sharing these memories with you always.

You showed me how a fierce and independent woman can live so fully and I have always admired you for that. Thank you for being so unapologetically you.

We had the privilege of being Heather's westerly neighbour for a number of years.  She was a warm lovely lady though one that a wise man wouldn't cross.  Had a wonderful acerbic sense of humour.  She would tolerate my doing laps of her drive when I was bored.  I remember we had a nice visit with Brian and Heather in Maui. We stayed in touch over the years though it had been a while since our last visit.  I regret we postponed our last one too long.  Our condolences to Brian and the family. Art and Aileen Green.

I wish we could have sent you off with a gathering larger than life and that makes me sad.   
I will always find comfort and memories in the buzz of hummingbirds as they chase each other across the garden,  
the intoxicating smell of garlic because you loved it like no other
person I knew,  
the first sip of an intensely delicious red wine, 
when I hear someone call me by my full name, 
the sound of Gordon Lightfoot,
a properly set knife on a table
and the first time we met and you called me pretty.

I promise you I will remember you with all of these little details... because you loved details.  You had a favorite necklace that you wore for a decade or more.  You had the impeccable taste and style of Lauren Bacall.  You insisted on perfection from everyone and you always, always, always wanted to help me.

I love you.  I'll miss you dearly and I'll remember you always.  I promise xo
