It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Herb Snowdon in North Vancouver on October 23rd 2025 at the age of 79. He will be missed by his wife and best friend of 55 years, Heather (nee Davies), his daughters Cate (Dave) Phillips and Maggie Snowdon, sister Gwen (Ross) Harris, grandchildren Jacqueline, Thomas, Charlotte, and Grace Phillips, as well as his nephews and other extended family. He was predeceased by his father, Ernest (1961), and his mother, Catherine (2015).
Herb was born in Montreal on September 7, 1946 to Ernest and Catherine Snowdon (nee Grant), raised in Calgary and attending the University of Alberta where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce. While studying at U of A on his way to the library, Herb met Heather and offered her a ride. They have been together ever since.
After graduation, Heather and Herb drove across Canada in their Green Volkswagen Beetle, living out of a tent and cooking off an old Colemen stove, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Herb saw an opportunity in the field of accounting, articled and earned a Chartered Accountant designation. Herb spent the majority of his professional career in Calgary as a partner with KPMG and predecessor firms. He had the honour of serving many notable Canadian and International clients, and sat on numerous boards where he shared his deep knowledge of business.
Herb had many professional accolades but his personal relationships with family and friends were of the highest importance. Herb was a true good guy with a quiet humour and kindness, that made it easy for him to make many life long friends. Herb was a big kid at heart, always ready to play with his grandkids and armed with a deep repertoire of bad dad jokes.
Herb loved sports, whether it was playing junior football in his youth, golfing at the Glencoe Golf & Country Club, skiing in the Canadian Rockies or playing baseball with his grandkids. With Herb’s determination and openness to trying new things, he started playing hockey for the first time at the age of 65, developing a new love of the game and created many new friendships. Herb had the opportunity to play in several KPMG vs Team Canada Alumni Association hockey games, which was great fun.
Herb will be remembered as an incredibly supportive person, always believing if you tried hard enough you could do it. Herb lived his life with integrity, grit and determination. Herb loved to explore the world with his family, having travelled extensively throughout Europe. In retirement, Herb, Heather and Maggie lived in both Halifax and North Vancouver, in pursuit of being as close as possible to Cate and the grandkids.
Thank you to the many health care providers over the years in Calgary, Halifax and Vancouver, especially the Lions Gate Palliative care team and North Shore hospice.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favourite charity.
In keeping with Herb’s wishes, no funeral or memorial service will be held. A virtual Celebration of Life will take place on November 14 from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m., where family and friends may gather online to honor his memory. For participation details, please contact [email protected]
