Mom was released from a long and fierce battle with cancer on October 1st at the North Shore Hospice. She joins Glen, our dad and her loving husband, as well as older sister Phemie. Mom, Grandma, Gram Gram, G-G-Ma, Aunty Rene, Irene, wrapped her light, love and laughter around everyone. These qualities will be carried on through her children: daughters Glenda (Bob), Sandra (Frank), son Lloyd (Laurie) and daughter Karen (Siggy). Her grandchildren, Christine (Victor), Carl, Jennifer (Joel), Hannah, Charlotte, Cody, Dylan, and beautiful great granddaughter, Deanna, will hold her memory dear as well. She is survived by Doreen, her twin, who will always maintain a loving bond. Mom also takes with her the love of sister-in-law Dixie and adored nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, extended family, and countless friends.
Born to Scottish parents, Mom’s life began in Vancouver when the twins, Doreen and Irene, joined older sister Phemie. The Miller sisters were established, and they enjoyed a happy and stable childhood. The recipe for life was hard work with lots of fun. Mom loved sports while attending John Oliver High School, and was proud of her Piece Work, sorting nuts and bolts for the War Effort. The twins later joined BC Tel as telephone operators, using their talents towards connecting people. Mom fell in love with a handsome redhead (Dad), married and moved to North Van. Like so many of their generation, they cleared the land, built a house, filled it with children, and with lots of love. Mom made sure everyone was welcome at the Johnson home. While Dad worked long hours as a Van-City fireman, Mom used her creative talents in PTA, as a Brown Owl, and in many activities at the North Shore Winter Club. Mom’s skills in knitting and sewing were put to use when she worked at the Yarn Barn on Lonsdale. Mom then returned to Vancouver working for Woodward’s until retirement, making many friends along the way.
Mom’s genuine interest in people, her generous spirit, and gift of leaving us with a smile will always be remembered. We’ll miss you, we love you.
Good night Irene, good night.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Irene’s name made to North Shore Hospice (northshorehospicepalliative.com) would be greatly appreciated. Please join us for a celebration of Irene's life at Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver, on Monday, October 22nd at 2:00pm.
