John Frederick Chambers, aged 87, passed away on May 31st, 2023, in North Vancouver, BC. He was born on May 1st, 1936, in Harrow, Middlesex, England, to the late Irene and John Chambers. Predeceased by his parents and second wife Jeannie and survived by his sister Beryl, brother Geoff, daughters Susan and Jackie (Frank), granddaughter Sofia and his niece Carole and nephews Andrew, Paul and Kieran. John was a beloved brother, father, grandad, uncle, and friend to many.
A sheet metal fabricator by trade, John was a dedicated worker who took great pride in his profession. As a young man he owned and operated a heating and ducting company in England. 10 years after immigrating to Canada he started another company, Home Craft Saunas. Later in life, he worked as a sheet metal fabricator for Honeywell until he retired. He was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail.
John had a vast array of hobbies and interests throughout his life including cycle racing, oil painting, swimming, and hiking. He was also an avid gym-goer, where he kept himself fit and healthy. He enjoyed walks along the seawall and spending time with his friends over coffee. He was fascinated by space and NASA, as well as the growth and development of China with its modern engineering and technology. John enjoyed cooking and was renowned for his stews and salads which were ‘tasty as heck’ and loved preparations for a good picnic. He was also an accomplished investor and enjoyed researching and investing in stocks. He had a lifelong love of machines especially trains and cars. He loved to plan road trips and adventures for family and friends to share in the joy of beautiful scenery and, of course, many picnics along the way. His approach to life was much like a road trip. He found as much joy in the journey as in the destination, he took the bumps and the detours of life in stride and with acceptance, and he always looked forward to where his journey might take him while taking time to stop and appreciate the wonders of nature and life and good company along the way.
He was generous with his time and always wanting to help. He found joy in sharing his knowledge and possessions freely with family and friends. He was playful and funny and left us many happy memories to hold in our hearts and buoy our spirits through the waves of grief and sorrow. He was a wonderful Dad and the best Grandad ever. We will think of him daily and miss him forever.
John's memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at St. John the Evangelist church, 220 8th St W, North Vancouver, BC V7M 1N1, on June 24th, 2023, at 1:00 pm.
