John Waugh Paterson, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, died after a short battle with cancer. John was a strong, stoic, thoughtful, kind, generous, resourceful and loving man. If you broke down on the side of the road, especially in the backcountry, he’d stop and help you out and probably fix the problem.
Born in Essex, England, to Jack and Jeanne Paterson, his childhood bore the scars of WW11. The family was evacuated from London to Wales during the Blitz and when he was nineteen he was conscripted to the army and served two years in Hong Kong. After his stint in the army, he returned to Essex and trained as a pipefitter and heavy duty mechanic.
In 1959, he met the beautiful, athletic, intelligent Vera Shaw. They fell madly in love and married within six months of meeting each other. In the next three years, Helen, Craig and Sandie were born.
In 1969, the family emigrated to North Vancouver and the wilds of Canada; a perfect place for John as he loved to hunt, fish, and explore the maze of logging roads that crisscross BC. John and Vera both served on the executive of the North Shore Fish and Game Club in the nineties, and for many years won awards for largest fish or buck. John and Vera’s retirement years in the 00’s were filled with travel and adventure. Trips to Australia, England, and Scotland to visit family - boating around the southern coastal inlets and wintering in Arizona to play golf.
We lost our matriarch Vera in 2017. John nurtured and supported his family through his grief; and we will be ever thankful. John will be missed, especially by his daughters and his grandchildren, Ryan Kissinger, Sean Kissinger and Connor Paterson and the Murphy’s Rovers.
Celebration of life will be held Saturday November 30, 2024 @ 2pm 1302 Lennox Street, N.Van.
