Mrs Walmsley

How could you forget Mrs. Walmsley?  You just can’t…

I met her at the beginning of 1966.  As a young soldier I was spending a weekend with a comrade at his parents’ house.  When we came back from an evening out we found out to our horror that his mother had just died in her home.

I was at a loss as to what I should do.  All of my belongings were in the house but I felt that I could not disturb their grief.  As I sat in my car in the dark preparing to spend the night and wondering what my next move might be, there was a gentle knock on my window.  Standing there in the rain was the next-door neighbour who was aware of the situation and she invited me into her home.  Three of my fellow soldiers who had also been displaced by this sad turn of events were already there.

That led to me becoming a frequent weekend guest at the Walmsley’s until I was posted to Ontario 15 months later.  Over that time she was the very essence of kindness, caring, and generosity.  I shared meals and company with all members of her own and extended family over the months.

Three years later, when I was again posted west for a four month course, I picked up with her family right where I left off.  I was also fortunate to be able to introduce her to my future wife whom I had brought out at Christmas.  Naturally we stayed with the Walmsley’s. 

Mrs. Walmsley is an unforgettable part of my past and continues to be a shining example of how to care for and treat people.

You just can’t forget someone like that.

Dear Grandma, 
thank you for all the wonderful, magnificent, fascinating, hospitable and always happy moments with you and grandpa  being together in your home. We remember moments of dishwashing with grandpa, picking blueberries in the garden, having a piece of chocolate after diner or beeing cared of before and after a day "out in town" ...  Our time with you was always like coming home, not just being on vacation. You will be unforgotten until we meet again.

Dear Aunty June,

We will miss our "stop ins" with you, and we still have fond memories of you and Uncle Gordon's  to us  for Manda's confirmation. You raised so many more children than your own. We all knew we could count on you.

So sorry to hear about the passing of Aunty June. June was friends with my grandparents, and she became my full-day babysitter from the ages of around five to 12. I spent many years at her house growing up and saw the love she had for her children & grandchildren. She also took in many foster children, and some of those became family as well.  In particular, I remember the love she had for Tammy Furber (Pinch) who lived with her from the age of 4, as well as Robin & Sherry Burnette. I know she considered all of them her daughters as well. I remember such great times with these three girls at "Aunty June's" house - cooking on the old wood stove, doing crafts at the kitchen table, and playing amongst the flowers in the yard.  I also remember such fun times with Tammy & Aunty June - at pre-school (which June taught) making macaroni collages and riding big wheels. And I will most miss hearing Aunty June saying - there's Tammy and Nicky the two sisters :).
