The family of Kathleen Joy Bain (b. 1939) are saddened to announce that she died at the age of 84 on February 19th, 2024, in her home in Kitsilano, Vancouver, surrounded by her family. She was predeceased by her brother, Ronald Bain, and her daughter, Susan Likar.
Kathleen’s life was filled with a love of music, winning several singing awards as a teenager, progressing to Grade 6 Piano in her youth, and joining multiple choirs as an adult. She was a regular Church goer and will be missed at congregation and when singing hymns, and her dry sense of humour will be strongly missed at family get togethers and dinner parties. Her life was nearly always shared with the companionship of the various dogs that she cared for greatly.
Although a Vancouverite at heart, Kathleen also lived in Dawson Creek for 30 years, where she was heavily involved in daily life, through the various activities of her children and her own love of the local community. Throughout her life, Kathleen believed strongly in the importance of education, and was working full time as a teacher when she received her Masters of Education with First Class Honours from the University of Victoria in 1984, whilst also managing the arrival of her four children that were born between 1965-1971. In her retired years, she enjoyed hosting foreign exchange students in her home with whom she shared her love of education. She loved listening to the stories of everyone who met her and always took the time and consideration to understand different ways of being.
She was known as someone who always championed anyone who wanted to improve their knowledge and take the time to broaden their understanding of the world.
Kathleen will be remembered as someone who loved her family and who valued them above all else, and took pride in understanding her lineage and ancestry across generations. One of her greatest joys was going out with her family and having a meal together, where she was truly in her element as the mother of the family. She was a strong and resilient woman who was fiercely independent and was never afraid to stand up for herself and for others who needed support. The support and kindness that she gave to her friends and relatives will be felt across generations to come, and dearly missed by those she has left behind.
Kathleen leaves behind her three surviving children: Greg Caisley (Yi Zhou), Linda Caisley (Jonathan Chalaturnyk) and Laura Kirkham (Richard Kirkham), her seven grandchildren: Emma Caisley (Gabriel Evans), Christian Caisley, Rhea Caisley, Riley Felardeau (Victoria Hurley), Adam Felardeau, Braden Likar (Sachiko Nakane) and Olivia Likar, and her great grandson, Jameson Felardeau.
