Kathleen “Kay” Newman was born in Orillia, Ontario on May 12, 1927 and raised in Udney, the youngest of five children to Herb and Jenny Newman. Her siblings were Bert, Archie, Adelaide and Florence.
After high school, she worked as a Bell telephone operator and administrative assistant.
She met and married the love of her life, Ray Newcombe, in 1951. In 1953, Brad was born in Barrie and in 1955, Paul was born in Smiths Falls. They also lived in Muskoka Falls in the 1950s.
The family lived in Fitzroy Harbour, a small village in the Ottawa valley for many years where Kay was a homemaker. She volunteered as a Sunday School teacher, church organist and a cub leader.
In 1985, because Ray had retired at age 55, they relocated to Vancouver where, over time, they widened the family circle to include Olivia, Georgia, Ron, Juanita, Robert and Wendy. She hosted many family gatherings, including birthdays and all seasonal celebrations.
Kay loved to entertain and over the years, right up to two months before she died, she hosted lunches and dinners, enabling people to come together over a meal. She was also very committed to her church community, Mount Seymour United Church, and volunteered at their thrift shop for many years.
The family would like to thank the nurses and caregivers who supported Kay so well in the final three weeks of her life.
