Laurel was born on May 28, 1943, and was a resident of West Vancouver and Salt Spring Island. Laurel passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026, at the age of 82 following a sudden, brief illness, surrounded by love, family, and friends during her final days at the North Shore Hospice.
She is predeceased by her husband, Murray, her parents Russ and Elma, her sister Holly, her grandson Sam, and survived by her children Erika, Kevin (Susan), Chris (Bev), Sue (Cam), her brother Doug (Patricia), grandchildren Bryn (Thuy), Christina, Graham (Sarah), Riel and Avery, and many loving friends.
She and Murray built a home on Saltspring in the 1980’s and also spent time in Palm Springs, California. After her husband’s death, Laurel showed her business acumen, continuing to manage their business interests decisively with a people-first ethic.
The family asks that mourners, in lieu of flowers, consider a contribution to the Laurel Gordon & Murray Sumpton fund at the Salt Spring Island Foundation or to the Lady Minto Hospital Foundation in her memory. ** These can be found by using the hyperlinks below.
