Margot Louise Poole Allingham (nee Wright) passed away peacefully on August 20, 2026.
Margot was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1931. When her mother died, she was still a child, so her father, a railway conductor on the Australian trains, asked his sister if she would raise Margot as a daughter. And indeed Margot always regarded “Auntie”as a mother. Having trained in librarianship after graduating with a BA at the University of Perth, Margot worked for several years as a research librarian at the University of Vienna before serving a similar function in the British West Indies, at the University of Kingston in Jamaica. She then emigrated to Vancouver, BC where she worked as a librarian at the British Columbia Institute of Technology in Burnaby.
She met Anthony Allingham shortly after arriving in Vancouver in 1956, initially being his brother David’s tennis partner. Margot and Tony married in 1962, and despite divorcing in 1973 they remained close until his passing in 2008.
Philip Allingham, Margot’s brother-in law, often visited his brother Anthony and sister in law Margot at her home in Kerrisdale. He first met her when Tony introduced her as his fiancée. Reportedly, the little wisecracker looking up (way up), at her face and said “Timb-er!” (due to enviable height) much to Margot’s horror, however she took it in stride, and remained good friends with Philip until her passing.
Margot was an avid photographer with a keen eye, developing her own photos in a darkroom, and loved to travel. Her baking and cooking was legendary! A supporter of the arts and numerous charities, she always wanted to help people and animals.
Margot will be remembered by her friends, past colleagues and family for her strength, sharp wit, sense of humour, fashion sense, warmth and intelligence.
Margot leaves behind nieces Patricia, Gwen, Stephanie, and Dana, nephews David and Devon, and brother in law Philip.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider making a donation in Margot’s memory to the SPCA or Alzheimer’s Society.
