Much like the fishing grounds where he would often be seen catching salmon, Richard has made it to the spawning grounds in the sky. His family are heartbroken to announce his sudden passing. Yet another unnecessary tragedy of our failed mental health system, particularly the LGH Hope Center team. There was no “hope” there for Rich.
A kind, gentle, open, honest and generous man with a great sense of humour, Richard was a highly dedicated father to his son, Brennan. Kudos to you, Rich! You did an amazing job and raised an exceptional young man.
Rich’s dedication extended to being the best uncle to his nephews Mitchell and Cole who were fortunate to have a close relationship with him. Rich would do anything for them and anyone else who needed a hand. He is also survived by his mom, Annette Kaufman, sisters, Suzanne (Alan), Celine (Jim), many aunts, uncles and cousins across the continent and beyond, and lifelong friend Campbell Massie.
Richard had a number of life mottos, but his favourite was MAKE MATH GREAT AGAIN!! He was an outstanding math educator of more than 500 students over 3 decades, but what he really taught his students was how to grow into their full potential. He had the patience, insight, and honesty to guide them through the difficult teenage years en route to becoming happy, successful young adults. Some of these students were fortunate to enjoy many a fishing trip with Rich. This passion for fishing brought him peace and joy which he loved to share. Richard loved his students and his students loved him.
Richard was a beloved figure in our family and community. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on in the memories we share and the lessons he taught us. Rest in peace Dad, Uncle Richie, Rich, Richard. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Private family service to be held at Stamp River on Vancouver Island, Rich’s favourite fishing hole. Donations to The Pacific Streamkeepers Federation https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/west-vancouver-streamkeeper-society/impact/view/ in Richard’s name would be a fitting tribute.
