It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected and tragic passing of Rick Klassen at age 60 in North Vancouver. Rick was pre-deceased by parents Abe and Irene as well as his oldest brother, Elmer. Rick is survived by his youngest brother Andy, Andy’s wife Sonya, and their children Braeden and Aurora, as well as extended family.
Born in Three Hills, Alberta, Rick moved with his family to Airdrie, Alberta where he completed school and became an Electrician. In 1983 he relocated to Vancouver to join Elmer on the West Coast. Abe and Irene soon followed, retiring in Abbotsford in 1985. Andy’s move in 1988 completed the family’s relocation to BC.
Rick was a voracious reader of all things science & technology and enjoyed learning, taking many additional courses to advance his career. He had an exceptional thirst for knowledge and if you ever pondered about any science issue, Rick would undoubtedly have read deeply on the subject and loved to discuss it. A son, brother, and uncle, Rick was a gentle, devoted, and caring man who would help family and friends without hesitation. He enjoyed his weekly walks at Cates Park or Ambleside beach, and Sunday brunches with family and friends. He was also a great teacher, helping brothers Elmer and Andy become better builders in their many projects.
Unfortunately, Rick’s health deteriorated both physically and mentally over the last year, as medical issues, anxiety, and depression overcame him. The family extends thanks to the many doctors and specialists on the North Shore who worked to help Rick.
In lieu of flowers and cards, the family graciously ask that donations in memory of Rick be made to the HOpe Center via Lions Gate Hospital Foundation (https://lghfoundation.com/tribute-donation/ ) so that others may be helped via ever-improving mental health support.
We hold you, Rick, tight in our hearts. Our memories of happier times together will sustain us through our grieving, as will our enduring love for you. You will be deeply missed by family and friends.
A celebration of life for Rick will be scheduled for spring 2020.
