Born in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, to Edmond and Aurora Legault, Richard was one of seven children, growing up alongside four brothers and two sisters. From an early age, Richard faced health challenges, but with the love of his family and dedicated medical care, he overcame them with remarkable strength. He went on to attend Catholic school and later studied in Quebec under the Christian Brothers - an experience he spoke of fondly throughout his life.
Known for his gift of conversation and quick wit, Richard often joked that he must have been "vaccinated with a gramophone needle." Though once curious about a life of silence in a religious order, he was encouraged to follow a different path - one that would lead him to a rich and varied life... because silent he was not!
Richard first trained as a hairdresser and enjoyed creative pursuits like modeling and writing comedy skits. When his father became ill, Richard stepped in to support his family, a turning point that inspired him to pursue nursing. He worked at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto before moving to Vancouver in 1979.
It was in Vancouver, that Richard met Alex. Their connection quickly grew into a loving and lasting partnership. Together, they worked, traveled, and built a life filled with companionship and care.
Richard continued his career in healthcare, including the time at Shaughnessy Hospital and later at GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre, where he worked at the front reception desk until retirement. He also pursued computer studies, always open to learning something new. A true adventurer, Richard traveled across Canada and beyond - to the United States, Hawaii, Mexico, England, Scotland, and Greece - Embracing life with curiosity and enthusiasm.
In 2018, Richard suffered a stroke, followed by a fall in 2019 that left him wheelchair dependent. Through it all, he remained resilient, maintaining his positive spirit and sense of humor. Richard and Alex were deeply grateful for the exceptional care and compassion he received at the hospitals, before moving into Haro Park in August 2022.
Partner, Alex wants to extend special thanks to Pamela Swansen for her unwavering support, guidance, and kindness, as well as her husband Doug for this visits and thoughtful baking.
Richard will be remembered for his warmth, strength, humor, and the love he shared so freely. His spirit will live on in all who knew him.
Rest in Peace
