Ruth was born in Milo, Alberta, to a hardworking farming family. Her father, of Swedish heritage, had been a fisherman in Seden before immigrating to Canada, where he and Ruth’s Norwegian mother built a life through farming before moving to Vancouver with their young family where her father became a carpenter and woodworker. Ruth often spoke fondly of her family, which included an older sister and older brother. Music was an important part of her upbringing, and she remembered her father singing in a Swedish choir.
Ruth spent her school years in Vancouver, where she completed both high school and secretarial school. She later worked as a secretary for Chevron, bringing dedication and professionalism to her career.
Family was central to Ruth’s life. She and her husband raised four sons, two of whom were adopted. She spoke proudly of her children and cherished the memories they created together. Her family grew across Canada, with sons living in BC and Ontario. She also carried the memory of her eldest son, who passed away before her.
Ruth enjoyed a full and active life. She loved socializing, dining out, and spending time outdoors on walks. Music brought her great joy, and she was often found listening to her favorite songs and singing along. She had a special affection for cats and owned several throughout her life. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing baseball and later embraced opportunities to travel, including memorable trips to Hawaii with her sons.
Many will remember Ruth for her signature bright red lipstick and her faithful weekly visits to the hair salon. These simple routines reflected her pride in her appearance and the vibrant personality.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ruth became a familiar and welcoming presence at the front screening table, greeting visitors each day with warmth and friendliness. She was well known throughout the community and brightened the days of many residents, families and staff.
Ruth spent many years living on Crystal Lane before moving to Amber Lane, where she remained until her passing. She will be remembered for her friendly spirit, her love of music and conversation, and the countless connections she made throughout her life.
