The family of Shirley Ann Mitchell (nee Slusarchuk) is deeply saddened to announce her passing on June 22, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on July 8, 1943, in Windsor, Ontario, she was the youngest daughter of the late Murray and Mary Slusarchuk.
Shirley will be remembered for her compassion, intelligence, and her gift for making people laugh. She met Roger on a blind date on Valentine’s Day, and they married three years later in July of 1968. After graduating from Wayne State University in 1967, she went on to become a high school English and P.E. teacher. She taught in Manitoulin Island, Parry Sound, King City, and Milton, before leaving the classroom to become a stay-at-home mom to her daughters. After moving to BC in 1987, Shirley changed career paths to become the Director of Field Operations for a local market research company.
After retiring, Shirley volunteered with Meals on Wheels, and together with Roger, started a league for new curlers. She always made time to dote on her grandkids and spend quality time with family and friends.
Beyond her career, Shirley was active in bowling, curling and golf. She was known for her quick wit, infectious sense of humour, and her unwavering love for her family and friends. Selfless and smart, she always gave the best advice. She was the life of the party, and her energy filled every room. She was a dedicated wife and mother, and an extraordinary friend to many. More than anything, Shirley treasured time spent with those she loved, and she leaves behind countless happy memories that will continue to bring smiles for years to come.
Shirley will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her devoted husband of 57 years, Roger; her children, Kelly Dornan (Sean) and Kim Mitchell (Sheldon); her four cherished grandchildren, Connor, Liam, Maya and Zoe; her sister-in-law, Suzanne Mitchell (Warren); her brother-in-law, Larry Mitchell (Carol); and her many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Murray, and her sister, Beverly.
A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held on July 18, 2026, at 2:00 pm at the Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Road in North Vancouver. All who knew and loved her are welcome to attend. Guests are invited to bring their favourite memories of Shirley to share.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. (https://alzheimersocietyinmemoriam.crowdchange.ca/page/inmemoryofshirley) or the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.
