Born in 1933, Bill lived in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto with his family until 1955 when he moved to Calgary, Alberta to take part in a management trainee program with the Hudson’s Bay Company. In 1962 he was transferred to Edmonton to be the manager of the Ladies Coat Department. He met Grace-Ellen, his wife of 58 years, at the home of a mutual friend.
Bill and Grace-Ellen moved to Montreal after their marriage in April, 1965 where he took on a position at Dupont as a sales representative, later to move to Dominion Textiles where he worked until 1970 when the family decided to move to Charlottetown, PEI.
In 1976 the Capiers returned to Edmonton, to be closer to both his parents who were in Calgary, as well as Grace-Ellen’s mother, Doris Brett Jones. He was the Assistant Manager of Dominion Life in Edmonton, later to be promoted to Manager of the Victoria B.C. branch in 1980. In 1985 the opportunity to return to retailing with the Hudson’s Bay Company was taken up and the family moved to Vancouver until his retirement in 1999 when they returned to Vancouver Island, to live in Qualicum Beach and then to Nanaimo.
Some 20 years later, in order to be closer to family, they relocated to North Vancouver where son Spencer, his wife Kikine and only grandson Sam were living, only 9 blocks away.
Bill had been a member of the Rotary Club, Active Club, and President of the Prince Edward Island Symphony Society. His favourite topic for discussion was current events and politics and he was active in a number of groups that met regularly to discuss major occurrences affecting society.
