Bill was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by Merle, his loving wife of 34 years. Left to mourn Bill’s passing are his son Bill (granddaughter Sophie); daughter Janet (grandchildren Devon, Marty and Skye); stepdaughter Laura and husband Dave (grandchildren Taylor and Drew); stepson Paul and wife Joanne (grandchildren Jon and Kelsey).Bill was predeceased by his daughter Linda.
Bill was born August 25, 1931 in Vancouver to William and Lillian Smitheringale.
After graduating high school from McGee Secondary, Bill earned his Bachelor of Geological Engineering from UBC and then his PHD in Geology from MIT.
Bill went on to be a Professor of Geology at Memorial University, St John's, Newfoundland. Bill and his first wife, Nell, celebrated the arrival of their three children in St. John’s.
In the mid-70’s Bill moved back to his birthplace of Vancouver. It was here, which he often referred to as “God’s Country”, that he began his own consulting company -- WG Smitheringale and Associates--which ran for more than 25 years.
An avid outdoorsman, Bill loved skiing in the winter, biking in summer and hiking year round.
Bill and Merle especially enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchildren at the cabin they built in "The Cariboo" (Bridge Lake).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honour to The Heart and Stroke Foundation.
The family will be gathering to celebrate and remember Bill’s life in the coming month.
