Remaining as his legacy are his sister Dorothea “Dot” Hine Rice (Tuscaloosa, Alabama); son Butler Preston Anderson “Tut” Hine (Ann)(San Jose, California); his daughter Kathrine Adair Hine Jarvis (Paul)(Helena, Alabama); grandson Stephen Wesley Hine (San Jose, California); granddaughter Emory Hannah Jarvis Arrieche (Robyn)(Murfreesboro, Tennessee); great granddaughters Elisabeth Joy Arrieche and Joanna Faith Arrieche (Murfreesboro, Tennessee).
In 1969 Butler retired early as a Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Army, to care for his family following the passing of his first wife Lillian. A veteran of World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam, Butler enjoyed regaling stories of his military experiences to those who enjoyed them. Following his distinguished career as a military officer, Butler raised tomatoes, served as a plant manager for Sackrete Concrete Company, and led a second career as a health inspector at the Tuscaloosa Department of Health. Important as a joy to him was Alabama football, as he travelled extensively in the Bear Bryant years every season to every game, no matter how far. Butler always enjoyed a good conversation, tasty food, and southern barbecue. His generous nature was known by many while he volunteered at Druid City Hospital in his senior years, by strangers, police officers, sheriff’s deputies, first responders, and fellow former military members that he noticed while out and about around town.
Butler’s immediate family recognizes as our own, Butler’s longtime partner and loving friend and caregiver, Wanda Kelly; her unending, uncompromising, and pure devotion to Butler and to our family has been as if she were our own, and we hers…and indeed she is! Wanda has lived her life as an example of Heaven’s angel gift to Butler for many years preceding his home going. It has been Wanda that has given the example of the faith in Jesus that Butler came to know and live out in his later years, and her witness to him that prepared the way for Butler to face courageously and with child-like faith his eternal future.
